What Lou Segal discovered in the Plant Life of South Africa
Lou Segal’s discovery of the plant life of South Africa can be compared to many of the world famous drugs derived from plants.
Lou Segal was not only a pharamceutical chemist and pharmacist, he also had degrees in Pharmacognosy, which is the study of medicines derived from natural sources.
After Lou discovered the blend of extracts used by the safari tribe for ritual purposes, his formulations began being used by people all over South Africa to help them restore healthy hair growth and younger looking skin.
Many doctors recommended and used his products, and one of these users was the Professor of Medicine at the University Of Cape Town. He saw the results on himself, first hand.
When Lou asked him to explain the mechanism, his reply was “it seems simply a secret of nature’ and just like most medicines today that come from natural plants. He went on to explain some of the most famous of them.
- Digitalis Extract found in the Foxglove Plant has been used to treat all kinds of heart conditions including atrial fibrillation and in people with heart failure.
- Quinine extracts from the Cinchona Bark has been used to treat Malaria for centuries.
- Alkaloid extract found in Poppy Plants was isolated in the 19th century and synthesized into Morphine. While that product may have unleashed a scourge on humanity, synthesized morphine and its cousin codeine have eased the suffering of millions of patients since they were introduced into medicine.
- Salicin extract isolated from the Bark of the Willow Tree, has been used in traditional medicine since the times of Hippocrates, and today Aspirin is what some call the miracle drug, used by millions for pain, fever reduction and anti-inflammation.
It’s clear that as removed as it is from the ancient lineage of traditional medicine, modern pharmacology owes a great deal to plants.
